    [01] American Embassy - Cyprus Airways - Ceremony

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- American Embassy in Nicosia and Cyprus Airways commemmorated here today the victims' of the terrorist attacks against the US, at a special ceremony, during which special tribute was paid to Michael Tarou, a flight attendant of Cypriot origin, who was member of the crew of United Airlines' aircraft, which crashed on the World Trade Center, September 11, 2001.

    Speaking at the ceremony held at the American Embassy in Nicosia, US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler said "America and its partners are committed to eliminating terrorism by every means at our disposal" and noted that the US campaign "of which Cyprus is a strong backer, includes diplomatic efforts, the freezing of financial assets, and the arrest of terrorists by law enforcement agents."     [03] Cyprus - President Clerides - UN - General Assembly

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA)-- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides departs November 6 for New York, where he will address the UN General Assembly, and will meet with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    Papapetrou said the Cyprus President would have a working lunch with the Ambassadors of the five UN Permanent Members on November 9 and would also meet other officials, to discuss the Cyprus question. CNA/GS/MK/2001

    [05] Commerce Minister - Egyptian Ambassador

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis stated today that Cyprus' target is to complete discussions with Egypt and Syria concerning exploitation of oil and gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, by the end of the year.

    Rolandis announced he would participate in a tripartite meeting with the Petroleum Ministers of Egypt and Syria to be held in Cairo before the end of this year on the issue of supplying natural gas to Cyprus from Syria. The Cypriot minister will be accompanied by a Technical Committee, to be formed very soon, to delimitate Cyprus' exclusive economic zone.

    The Cypriot minister's announcement was made after a meeting in Nicosia between Rolandis and Egypt's Ambassador to Cyprus Omar Mohamed Metwally, who conveyed to him an invitation from Egypt's Economy Minister Boutros Ghali to visit Cairo next March for the 4th session of the Egypt-Cyprus Joint Trade Commission and to attend the inauguaration of the Cairo International Fair.     [06] Cyprus - Desertification

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA)-- Permanent Secretary of Cyprus' Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Michael Constantinides said that Cyprus has put into practice programmes aiming at controlling desertification and soil erosion, including measures for the revitalization of the countryside, reforestation, soil conservation, improvement of irrigation and the massive use of treated wastewater.

    Speaking at the fifth session of the conference of the parties to the convention to combat desertification, held in Geneva, Constantinides said that "a special programme for soil conservation has been approved and its implementation will take place during the following year," adding that the basic aim is "to encourage farmers for conservation and improvement of the soil."

    [05] Cyprus cabinet - Bill - Terrorism

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government approved today a bill by which Cyprus will ratify the International Convention to Combat the Financing of Terrorism. The bill will be tabled tommorrow by Minister of Justice and Public Order Nicos Koshis in the House of Representatives for discussion and final approval, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced.

    Speaking after a meeting of the Council of Ministers under President Glafcos Clerides, the Spokesman said "the bill provides for the ratification of the International Convention to Combat the Financing of Terrorism, the determination of punishments for offences under this Convention, the inclusion of the necessary provisions taking into account the internal law in relation to the provisions of the Convention."     2020:CYPRESS:08 EU-Cyprus JPC - Session Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA)-- The 20th EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which ended today in Brussels, ascertained Cyprus' extraordinary progress in its EU membership talks and decided to organise a special meeting with euro-mediterranean parliamentarians within the framework of its next session to be held in Cyprus next spring.

    A press release issued at the end of the two-day session, co-chaired by Mexhtild Rothe, on behalf of the European Parliament, and Tassos Papadopoulos, on behalf of the Cyprus parliament, says "Cyprus had made extraordinary progress in the accession negotiations" and adds that "the solution of the Cyprus problem before Cyprus' accession to the EU would be beneficial for all parties without being a precondition for the EU memberhip".     [09] Kasoulides - EU - Cyprus

    Larnaca, Oct 10 (CNA) -- EU enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen has made it crystal clear that Cyprus will be among the countries that will join the EU, during its next enlargement, on January 1, 2004, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here tonigh on arriving from Brussels, where he addressed the 20th EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee session.

    Kasoulides underlined that another thing he had ascertained during his visit to Brussels was that the EU recognised Cyprus' contribution to the fight against international terrorism and considered as unfounded press reports involving Cyprus with money laundering issues. CNA/MAN/MK/GP/2001
