[01] Cyprus - Former CIA chief - Allegations - Reaction
Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- The Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus
Afxentis Afxentiou refuted today as "totally unsubstantiated and
unacceptable" allegations by the former CIA chief James Woolsey who,
talking about Osama bin Laden's finances, said that Cyprus is the worst tax
haven and should not be allowed to join the European Union until it hands
over information on bin Laden's financial activities.
A US embassy spokesman here told CNA today that Woolsey's personal views do
not reflect the policies of the US government.

[02] President Clerides - US Ambassador
Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler said today
that Cyprus and the US share the common determination to face up to the
challegens the scourge of terrorism poses, stressing that the US will lead
a campaign against violence, fanaticism and terrorism and not against
Islam.
Speaking after a "long and good" meeting with President Glafcos Clerides,
Bandler said that he also discussed the Cyprus question with the President.

[03] Spokesman - Terrorism - Cyprus
Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- Administering justice and eliminating terrorism
should be the reaction to the recent terrorist attacks in the US,
Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, pointing out that
Nicosia believes that terrorism must be dealt with in a general manner,
including the search for and the uprooting of the causes that breed
terrorism.
"The reaction to the terrorist attacks in the US should be calm and revenge
should not be sought", Papapetrou said, adding that justice must be
administered and terrorism eradicated.

[04] President Clerides - New British High Commissioner
Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) --Britain continues to support UN efforts for a just
and comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem and is "deeply
disappointed" by the refusal of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to
resume the talks on the Cyprus question, new British High Commissioner to
Cyprus Lyn Parker said here today, presenting his credentials to President
Glafcos Clerides, adding that Cyprus has made "impressive progress" in its
course towards EU membership.
Receiving the credentials, President Clerides expressed the belief that
Cyprus will continue to rely with confidence on Britain's valuable support
to the steady course towards the EU and referring to the Cyprus problem he
said that Britain, as a guarantor power, would continue to use its
influence to bring about a peaceful reunification of the island.

[05] Maritime Cyprus 2001 - Press conference
Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- "Maritime Cyprus Conference 2001" will prove to be
very successful in its goal to better promote and upgrade the Cyprus
shipping industry, as well as world shipping, Permanent Secretary of the
Ministry of the Communications and Works and Chairman of the conference
organizing committee Vasos Pyrgos has said, adding that the conference "is
classified as one of the largest international maritime conferences,
attracting a large number of maritime personalities from all over the
world".
In his remarks, Vice Chairman of the organizing committee Juergen Hahn said
that last week's terrorist attacks in the US would not have any
repercussions on Cyprus, which is not in the list of war risk countries.
