    [02] Spokesman - Terrorism - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus' record in terrorism issues is absolutely blank, as far as the government-controlled area is concerned, government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, pointing out that nothing could cast a shadow over Cyprus' blank record and added "Cyprus takes sides with the battle against terrorism."

    Papapetrou denied allegations that Saudi Arabian Usama Bin Landen is connected to Cyprus either directly or indirectly and said allegations that Cyprus is involved with terrorism are completely unfounded. CNA/MK/RM/2001

    [03] British Defence Ministry - Cyprus - Bases

    London, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Britain's Ministry of Defence insisted today that there is no change at all in the operating situation of the British Bases in Cyprus.

    Answering a question by CNN, the British spokeswoman said "there has not been any change with regard to the operation of the bases in Cyprus at the moment".

    Asked to confirm whether the military exercises in cooperation with Oman were taking as planned, she gave an affirmative answer. CNA/KT/GS/GP/2001

    [04] Cyprus - Chinese Minister - Agreement

    Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus and China today signed a bilateral agreement on issues relating to Civil Defence and Local Administration elections.

    The agreement was signed by Cyprus Minister of Interior Christodoulos Christodoulou and Chinese Minister of Civil Affairs Duoji Cairang, currently in Cyprus for a four-day official visit, during which he will be received by President Glafcos Clerides. CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [05] Israel - Egypt - FM - Cyprus - Meeting

    Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) - The Foreign Ministers of Israel and Egypt had a secret meeting in Cyprus in the evening of 31 August 2001, at a house near the southern coastal town of Limassol, as part of efforts to solve the Middle East problem, an Israeli diplomatic source told CNA today.

    The source said the meeting of Simon Peres and Ahmed Maher was an initiative of the Israeli minister. The Cyprus government had responded to a request to provide security and arrange the meeting away from the press. CNA/TT/GP/2001

    [06] President Clerides - South African Minister

    Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) -- South African Minister to the President Essop Pahad was received here today by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides. No statements were made after the meeting.

    Later on Pahad was received by House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias and according to an official press release, Christofias briefed the South African official on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and exhanged views on bilateral relations. CNA/GS/GP/2001

    [07] Cyprus Foreign Minister - Return

    Larnaca, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said today that international terrorism aims at overthrowing today's western civilisation of which Cyprus is part of.

    Speaking on his return from New York (via Zurich), where he was stranded after the terrorist attacks, Kasoulides said fanatic Islamists cooperate with terrorists against many countries, including Chechnya rebels, who are also backed by the illegal regime, in the areas of the Cyprus Republic occupied by Turkish troops.
