[01] UN Spokesman - Cyprus Problem

Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Spokesman Fred Eckhard announced yesterday that Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides is going to New York at the Secretary General's invitation.

Eckhard told the press earlier yesterday that President Clerides was going to New York as the President of Cyprus, but he later on corrected this statement saying that President Clerides was going to New York at the Secretary General's invitation.

"I believe Mr Clerides is coming here as the President of Cyprus. In that capacity he will most likely meet with the Secretary General", Eckhard said.

He (Eckhard) later announced a correction, saying that Mr Clerides was coming to New York at the Secretary General's invitation.

Referring to the UN-led talks on Cyprus, UN Secretary General's Spokesman said that the UN "do not know yet (..) what's happening with the talks".

"Whether they (the talks) can be resumed, whether Mr (Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf) Denktash will change his mind and decide to participate, we don't yet know", Eckhard said.

Asked whether he has a schedule to announce concerning talks with President Clerides, Eckhard answered that "there is nothing new on Cyprus".

Last week UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto conveyed an invitation to Glafcos Clerides, the Greek Cypriot leader, and Rauf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader, for separate meetings with the UN chief on Septembr 12, to resume the search for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

President Clerides has accepted the invitation and left yesterday for New York via Zurich. Denktash has turned down the invitation for the 12 September meeting.

Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced last week that President Clerides would fly to New York responding to Kofi Annan's invitation for talks with the two community leaders.

After Denktash's refusal to attend the New York meeting, Clerides will meet Annan in his capacity as President of the Cyprus Republic. The meeting has been fixed for tomorrow afternoon (1600 local time) at UN headquarters.

Last year Denktash abandoned the negotiating table demanding recognition for his self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus before he returns to the UN-led peace talks.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

During his stay in New York President Clerides will have meetings with the representatives of the permanent members of the Security Council and other officials dealing with the Cyprus problem.

He is scheduled to return to Cyprus on Saturday, September 15, to welcome on September 17 Spain's Premier, whose country will take over the EU six- month rotating presidency, and on September 20, India's Premier, who will pay a three- day visit to Cyprus.

President Clerides will return to New York on September 22 to address the UN General Assembly on September 25.
