    [02] Spokesman - UN Secretary General - Special Adviser

    Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has made it clear that he will not accept the terms Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is setting with regard to the UN peace talks and stresses that there is no more room for the concessions on the part of the Greek Cypriot side beyond the settlement for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

    "The government and the President are not going to agree on either acknowledgement of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus or upgrading the status of Denktash," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, pointing out that anything to the contrary will be in conflict with the specific provisions of relevant UN resolutions.

    Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has expressed "grave concern" about the escalation of violence in the Middle East and condemned the events that led to the death of the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

    The government renewed its appeal for restraint and called on all involved to return to negotiations.

    [04] Alvaro de Soto - Cyprus - Arrival

    yLarnaca, Aug 29 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto arrived today in Cyprus for seperate consultations with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, aiming at the resumption of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem.

    On his arrival at Larnaca airport De Soto was very brief in his statements and said that later today he will pay a "courtesy call" on President Clerides.

    Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto did not sound him out during their 50-minute meeting today, after his arrival on the island where he will hold a series of seperate meetings with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, aiming at the resumption of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem.

    Invited to say whether he had any luck at his meeting with the President, De Soto said that he will have luck when a settlement in the Cyprus question is reached.

    [06] Cyprus - Russia - Foreign Ministers - Moscow - Meeting

    By Nicos Markides Moscow, Aug 29 (CNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov assured here today that his country would do its utmost to contribute efforts to reach a settlement in the Cyprus problem, facilitating Cyprus territorial integrity and understanding between the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot communities on the island.

    Ivanov, was speaking to the press after a meeting he had with Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, who on his part said that Cyprus attaches great importance on Russia's role in the Cyprus question, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. CNA NM/GS/AAR/MK2001
