Cyprus Airways - Flights - Israel

Nicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus Airways flights to and from Tel Aviv continue as scheduled, the company's Press and Public Affairs Director Tasos Aggelis has said, noting that crews spend only a few hours near Ben Gurion airport before leaving Israel.

He said there have been no concerns raised about staying in Tel Aviv, following the escalation of violence in Israel, but pointed out if any worries are expressed, the matter will be taken up by the company.

    Famagusta - Second Turkish offensive

Nicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- Turkey has no place in Cyprus and its occupation troops cannot stay on the island, Famagusta Mayor Andreas Pouyiouros has said, reflecting the feelings of Greek Cypriots and especially the citizens he represents.

His comments mark today's anniversary of Turkey's second offensive against Cyprus in the summer of 1974, when Ankara's representatives to the Geneva peace talks at the time refused to give the Greek Cypriot representative time to consider their proposals and effectively presented Glafcos Clerides, now President of the Republic, with an ultimatum.

    Illegal excavations - Protest

Nicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- The government of Cyprus has strongly protested to the UN the illegal and "ethically unacceptable" to scholars excavations in the Turkish occupied area of Salamis, on the east of the island, saying they have "an adverse and destructive effect on Cyprus' cultural heritage."

In a letter to the General Assembly, the Republic's Charge d'Affaires at UN permanent mission George Kasoulides said the government of Cyprus holds "the government of Turkey and its subordinate administration in the occupied areas responsible for all illegal excavations, which violate international conventions and recommendations on the issue."
