Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides received here today Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Dr Mohamad Maher Jamal, who is on a three-day official visit to Cyprus.

No statements were made after the 45-minute long meeting, after which Jamal and Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis went to the Ministry of Commerce to discuss energy matters.

Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Syria will work for the remaining of this year with a view to conclude a bilateral agreement to determine the continental shelf and to delimitate the exclusive economic zone of each country, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis has said, adding that Damascus is positive about the matter and Nicosia will examine a Syrian proposal to supply Cyprus with natural gas.

Speaking after a meeting here with Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Dr. Mohamad Maher Jamal, Rolandis said no decisions were taken at today's talks and described bilateral ties as "excellent" whereas Jamal, through an interpreter, said oil and gas related issues were on today's agenda.

Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Spanish Premier Jose Maria Aznar is scheduled to pay a one-day official visit to Cyprus next month, Spanish Charge d'Affaires in Nicosia Enrique Mora has said, adding that the programme of the visit has not yet been finalised.

"The Prime Minister's programme is at this stage provisional but he is expected to arrive on 17 September and leave the following day," he told CNA today, adding the visit takes place in view of the Spanish six-monthly rotating European Union presidency which Madrid will exercise from January 2002 until July the same year.
