    [02] Foreign Minister - UN talks - Turkey - Denktash

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has stressed that the government will not concede to any move in the UN-led peace talks it does not agree with, indicating however that a change in the label of the talks, but not in the substance, would not cause problems.

    The minister also said the government is ready to continue the UN peace process as this is defined by the terms of reference of the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, based on UN resolutions.

    [03] US aid - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus is set to receive 15 million dollars in US aid to promote peace and cooperation between the two communities on the island, following the adoption, by the US House, of legislation on foreign operations, export financing and related programs.

    The Appropriations Act provides for "not less than 15 million of the funds appropriated should be made available for Cyprus to be used only for scholarships, administrative support of the scholarship program, bicommunal projects and measures aimed at reunification of the island and designed to reduce tensions and promote peace and cooperation between the two communities on Cyprus."

    [05] UN Spokesman - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto were due to meet Wednesday in New York, Annan's Spokesman Fred Eckhart has said.

    He also said that no time and no venue have been set for a meeting between the Secretary General and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Rauf Denktash.

    [06] Attorney General - EU - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus is working on specific proposals to deal with problems likely to arise from the Republic's accession to the European Union, prior to a political settlement, Attorney General Alecos Markides said here today.

    He also said the possibility of having a divided Cyprus join the EU is being talked about within member states, even though they may not be ready to discuss this officially at this stage. CNA MM/ÌÊ/2001
