[01] Cyprus - Foreign Minister - Statements
Paphos, Jun 10 (CNA) – The Cyprus government considers the Irish "no" vote
in a referendum on the Nice Treaty as a setback for all candidate states
and European Union enlargement, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides told
reporters before his departure for Brussels late Saturday, but expressed
certainty that a new vote will take place and the Irish will change their
position.
Asked about the Cyprus peace effort, Kasoulides said no discussions have
begun on unofficial UN documents as Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash
continues to insist on his demands for recognition of the illegal entity in
the areas of the island occupied by Turkey since 1974 before he returns to
the negotiating table.
