    DIKO President - Interview

    by Maria Myles

Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- A change of the basis of the UN-led peace talks would lead to a settlement that will exclude Cyprus' accession to the European Union, Tassos Papadopoulos, President of the Democratic Rally (DIKO), believes, and points out that insistence by the Turkish Cypriot side on its demands would result in the collapse of the talks and the equal sharing of responsibility between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

In an interview with CAN, two weeks before the parliamentary elections, Papadopoulos said it would be "wrong" to accept any proposal for a settlement, "to prove to the EU our good will" and added that the acquis communautaire is a "strong foundation" to guide the talks on the right track.

[07] Freed Greek Cypriot - Application - President Clerides

Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) – A Greek Cypriot, illegally detained by the regime in the Turkish- occupied part of Cyprus for four months, is intending, together with his family, to file an application to the European Court of Human Rights against Turkey for his abduction and ill-treatment by the Turkish occupation regime.

Panicos Tziakourmas, abducted on 13 December 2000 by the Turkish Cypriot regime within the British Bases area in the island's southeastern part, was "charged and sentenced" for drug possession on April 26. The illegal court in occupied Famagusta said he had "served his six-month sentence" and set him free. On the same day, Tziakourmas' mother died after she had suffered a stroke a week earlier.
