[01] Cyprus government - Turkish threats - Protest
Nicosia, Apr 24 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has strongly protested to the
UN provocative statements and threats made by Turkish Foreign Minister
Ismail Cem, last week, as not being conducive to the UN-led process for a
solution on the island and not promoting a climate of reconciliation, while
at the same time encouraging the Turkish Cypriot leader to remain
intransigent.
In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, sent yesterday, the Republic's
permanent representative to the UN Sotos Zackheos says that Ankara and Cem
totally disregard the Turkish Cypriots increasing voices of desperation
with the situation in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 and
deny them the opportunity to share the benefits of the Republic's accession
to the European Union.
