[01] Cyprus Foreign Minister - US Secretary of State

Washington, Apr 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has outlined to his US counterpart Colin Powell the importance Cyprus' prospective accession to the European Union has on the UN-led effort to find a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus question, expressing at the same time the need to see the UN-sponsored proximity talks resume.

According to US diplomatic sources, Powell expressed his support for the UN peace effort and the resumption of the talks, noting at the same time that the US understands the position of the Cyprus government that the island's accession to the EU offers a window of opportunity which could act as a catalyst on attempts to break the current deadlock.
