    [01] Cyprus President - US ambassador

    Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) - The Cyprus problem and the UN-led peace effort was at the focus of a 90-minute meeting President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides had here today with US ambassador Donald Bandler, who said American officials are working towards the resumption of the talks.

    Bandler said after the Presidential Palace meeting that they also discussed Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides' current visit to the US, leading up to his meeting with Secretary of State Colin Powell on April 9, pointing out to the fact that it is taking place in the first 100 days of the Bush administration.

    On Friday, the weather mostly fine but with showers on Saturday, the winds light to moderate breezes. The temperature between 11C min and 21 max over the coast and between 09C min and 23C max inland.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 08/04/2001 to 9/04/2001

    The weather mostly fine and sunny with a couple of degrees increase in temperature.

    [03] Cyprus Foreign Minister - US - Meetings

    Washington, Apr 5 (CNA) - Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has asked US congresspersons and Committees to back the effort for a settlement in Cyprus and outlined the government positions on the issue during his meetings here that got underway yesterday.

    "I have promoted our positions and asked Congress for its support," Kasoulides told CNA after his day-long meetings with congresspersons, senators, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House International Relations Committee.

    [04] Irish Premier - Cyprus - Chief negotiator

    Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) - Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern expressed support to Cyprus' accession to the European Union the soonest and without any preconditions, at a meeting he had in Dublin yesterday with the Cyprus Republic's chief negotiator in the accession talks George Vassiliou, with whom he also discussed the Union's enlargement process.

    Ahern reiterated Ireland's position for a settlement in Cyprus based on UN resolutions and decisions, according to an official announcement issued in Nicosia today.

    [05] Australian Cyprus envoy - Interview

    by Maria Myles Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) -- Australian envoy for Cyprus Jim Short has said it would be very difficult to see a resumption of the UN-led peace talks because of the preconditions Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is imposing for recognition of his self-styled regime, in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

    Short has also said that various ideas are being floated around in a bid to help resume the talks, including the submission of further papers or proposals by the UN in line with the framework they are pursuing.
