    [02] Cyprus chief negotiator - EU

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) - The European Union appears satisfied with explanations Cyprus has given on how it tackles money laundering, while the chapter on the free movement of capital is expected to be closed by Thursday, according to the Republic's chief negotiator in the accession talks with the Union, George Vassiliou.

    Vassiliou called on President Glafcos Clerides today to brief him on the contacts he had in Brussels last week and his visit there again from tomorrow to take part in the 11th meeting of the chief negotiators taking place on Thursday.

    [03] Australian envoy - Cyprus visit

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) - Australia's special envoy for Cyprus Jim Short is arriving here Wednesday for a week-long visit to discuss the Cyprus problem.

    During his stay, Short will be received by President Glafcos Clerides and will meet Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and political party leaders.

    [05] Cyprus - Pope John Paul II - Visit

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides is expected to extend an official invitation to John Paul II to visit Cyprus in early May.

    The Reverend Umberto Barato, of the Chancery of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Cypus, has told CNA that any such visit would probably be brief and restricted to the Paphos area, on the western coast where Apostle Paul is said to have received 39 lashes for his missionary work.

    [06] Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Íicosia, Ìar 26 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tusday and Wednesday: 27/03/2001 to 28/03/2001

    The weather will be fine and hot for the period. Possible fog patches and low cloud at night. Gentlee sea breezes will prevail during the day, with light northwesterly to northeasterly winds during the night. State of sea smooth to slight.

    Maximum temperatures between 28C inland, 27C south coast, 24C west coast and 13C over mount Olympus.

    Minimum temperatures between 11-14C.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 29/03/2001 to 30/03/2001

    On Thursday the weather will be mainly fine with local cloud. On Friday the cloud is expected to increase. The temperature will not change significnatly.

    [07] Cyprus - Greece - Helicopters

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) - Greece has lent Cyprus two Bell helicopters that are necessary for search and rescue operations, Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos announced today, adding that the helicopters and their eight-member crews are here since yesterday and will remain on the island until Cyprus buys its own helicopters.

    Greece lent Cyprus the US-made helicopters after the island's 56-seat House of Representatives did not approve a 22-million-pound allocation last month for the purchase of four Bell 412 for the National Guard.

    [08] Cyprus airports - Foreign interest

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) - Cyprus' Ministry of Communications and Works has received 23 expressions of interest from companies from 14 countries for the development and operation of the Larnaca and Paphos airports, its permanent secretary Dr Vassos Pyrgos announced today.

    Pyrgos said "a more detailed expression-of-interest invitation will be issued in the next six weeks, after which some six companies will be short- listed and we will come out with final tenders in August. We hope that six months later we will decide on the tender."

    [09] Foreign Ministers of Greece and Britain - Cyprus issue

    London, Mar 26 (CNA) - British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has expressed the hope that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will return to the negotiating table to reach a settlement in Cyprus and said the need for progress in the Cyprus peace effort will be constantly raised with Turkey during its dialogue with the European Union.

    Cook referred to the Cyprus question at a press conference after a two-hour- long meeting in London with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, who said Ankara's obligations towards the EU are outlined in the accession partnership agreement.

    [10] EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee - Meeting

    Limassol, Mar 26 (CNA) – Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides today reiterated the Greek Cypriot side's willingness to participate in the UN- led proximity talks at any given moment, but made it clear that "it is not prepared to accept any change in the basis of the talks so that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash returns to the negotiating table."

    Kasoulides was addressing deputies attending the 19th Meeting of the EU- Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee, that opened today in the coastal southern town of Limassol, during which the representative of the Swedish Presidency-in-Office of the EU Council, German Ambassador to Cyprus Peter Wittig said the 15-member block "will continue its efforts to inform the Turkish Cypriot community of the advantages of EU membership."
