Washington, Mar 2 (CNA) - Cyprus is not a producer of significant amounts
of narcotics, it has a small but growing population of soft-core drug users
and by international standards drug related crime is still low, according
to the State Department reference to Cyprus in its annual report on the
production and illegal trafficking of narcotics.
The report, for the year 2000, supports that as a result of the island's
large offshore banking centre Cyprus "remains vulnerable to money
laundering" and says international enforcement cooperation is limited
somewhat because of the divide on the island.

Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - US Ambassador in Nicosia Donald Bandler has said
Washington continues to work behind the scenes on the Cyprus question,
noting that there is always work to be done on the matter.
The Ambassador, who was speaking after a meeting with Cyprus President
Glafcos Clerides, dismissed reports suggesting indirect recognition of the
self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus, saying such reports
are a misinterpretation of facts and fantasies.
