[01] Excavations - Medieval Sugar Mill - Kolossi
Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) - The Department of Antiquities has announced the
completion of the systematic archaeological excavations at the medieval
sugar mill of Kolossi, which belonged to the powerful religious military
Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, known as Hospitallers.
The excavations at Kolossi, situated in the Limassol district, brought to
light a bronze shallow bowl, a few clay Ottoman smoking pipes, a number of
intact characteristic vases used for the distillation of sugar, some
important rock-cut structures, which are related to the water distribution
from the nearby massive aqueduct, as well as a unique clay hand-grenade
with incised decoration, dating to the 16th century.
