    [01] Dutch MP - Cyprus - Visit

    Nicosia Jan 11 (CNA) - Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) MP, Frans Timmermans, arrives in Cyprus this evening.

    During his visit to Cyprus, Timmermans will be received by President Glafcos Clerides and will meet with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and President of the Democratic Party Tassos Papadopoulos. CNA/GSA/RG/2001


    [02] British Foreign Secretary - Tziakourmas

    Brussels, Jan 11 (CNA) - British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said today that his government has requested from Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to release Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who was abducted and is being illegally detained in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

    Speaking in Brussels after a meeting with Deputy President of the Cyprus Movement of Social Democrats Yiannakis Omirou, Cook said the British government was also making efforts in the direction of Turkey, which occupies the northern third of the island since it invaded Cyprus in 1974.     [03] AHEPA - UN chief - Letter - Tziakourmas

    Nicosia, Jan 11 (CNA) - In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) requests the immediate attention and assistance of Annan to bring about the release and safe return of Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who was abducted and is being illegally detained by the Turkish occupation forces.

    Copies of the letter have been sent to UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Mary Robinson, the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, and the permanent representatives of United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Greece, Australia and Cyprus to the United Nations.     [04] AOSIS - Workshop - Climate - Energy

    Nicosia, Jan 11 (CNA) - Cyprus will host the 3rd Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Workshop on Climate Change, Energy and Preparations for the 9th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development, to take place January 15 to 19, 2001.

    The Workshop is aimed at developing unified, coherent and pragmatic policy decisions that would be conducive to a more enlightened outcome of the 9th session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and also begin to give direction to the needs for institutional strengthening within the AOSIS regions.
