[01] France - Cyprus problem - Turkish side

Nicosia, Dec 16 (CNA) -- France has expressed its regret with measures the illegal regime in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 has imposed against the UN Peace-keeping Force on the island (UNFICYP), as they affect the force's operation and make the UN Secretary-General's effort for a settlement more difficult.

A French Foreign Ministry spokesman, according to an Athens News Agency report from Paris, also expressed hope that in accordance with Security Council resolution 1331 the Turkish side would restore the status quo ante, especially in the region of Strovilia where it illegally set up a new barrier.

[02] European Union - Cyprus - Business Information Centre

Nicosia, Dec 16 (CNA) -- The Office of the European Information Centres network in Cyprus will be upgraded to a full European Information Centre with the same status as other Centres operating in European Union member states, according to a Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) press release.

"This development will allow KEVE to upgrade the services it offers to local businesses through the European Information Centre and will definitely contribute towards informing Cyprus businesses on issues relation to the Republic's harmonisation with the acquis communautaire and developments in the EU in the business field," the Organisation says.

    [03] Greek Cypriot - Abduction - Family

Nicosia, Dec 16 (CNA) -- The family of a 40-year-old Greek Cypriot who was abducted by the Turkish occupation forces on Wednesday today went to the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia to demand his immediate release, dismissing the illegal charges pressed against him that he was carrying drugs.

The wife, sister, brothers and three children as well as other family members and friends of Panicos Tziakourmas did not hide their feelings and burst out crying, describing him as a hard working, timid, poor person who works to earn a living and has nothing to do with anything illegal. They also wondered how a Greek Cypriot could be abducted within British Bases area.
