    [01] Cyprus - Peace talks - UN

by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 6 - As the UN-led proximity talks get into the second week, there can be little doubt as to who is calling the shots in this protracted process, which is expected to continue in much the same format in late January and February before it takes a long break due to May's parliamentary elections in Cyprus.

All indications are that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will present the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides with "an outline of the discussions so far on the four chapters which will form the backbone of the comprehensive settlement". These relate to the constitution, security, territory and property and refugees.

[04] President Clerides - UN Special Adviser - Working breakfast

by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 6 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has given no indication as to what UN chief Kofi Annan intends to do on Wednesday when he joins here the proximity talks with meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, despite increasing speculation that Annan is expected to present an outline of general principles so far discussed at the talks.

Alvaro de Soto said he talked about a number of issues with President Clerides at the working breakfast they had here today, adding that both sides respond to the constant supply of revised papers he hands them and clarifying that there is no change in the procedure he has adopted in the talks.

[05] UN envoy - Turkish Cypriot leader - Meeting

by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 6 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash claimed today that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was not the authority "under which we are working" and that the UN chief would be in Geneva later this week just to "have a look" at the ongoing proximity talks on the Cyprus problem.

Speaking after an hour-long meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, in the context of the talks, Denktash said negotiations were being carried out between "two equal parties for a new partnership." CNA/MM/RG/GP/2000
