Cyprus - Research and development - 1998 report

Nicosia, Oct 28 (CNA) - Total research and development expenditure in Cyprus in 1998 is estimated at 10,8 million pounds (1 CY pound is trading at approximately 1,5 US dollars), which corresponds to 0,23% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to 5,6 million pounds or 0,18% in 1992, at which time the previous similar survey was carried out.

An ad-hoc survey, carried out by the Statistical Service for the collection of data on scientific research and experimental development, indicates that comparing to other countries, the share of the GDP of Cyprus devoted to research and development appears to be quite low. The share of this expenditure to the GDP in the 15 member-states of the European Union stands at 1,90%, ranging from 0,48% in Greece to 3,82% in Sweden. CNA/RG/2000

    EuroMP - Cyprus - Turkey

London, Oct 28 (CNA) - Any solution to the Cyprus issue in the direction of a confederation would make the division of the island not only permanent but legal as well, EuroMP Tereza Villiers has said.

In an interview yesterday with London Greek Radio (LGR), Villiers said that to give the regime of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash "legal status under confederation would mean he can walk away".
