[02] UN envoy - Cyprus - Arrival - Statement
Larnaca, Oct 22 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for
Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, arrived on the island tonight, saying he was not
bringing any proposals to the leaders of the two communities and reassuring
that the UN chief was taking into full consideration relevant UN
resolutions, in carrying out his mandate.
Speaking at Larnaca Airport, de Soto noted that he would be meeting with
President Glafcos Clerides, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and "other
people", during his stay on the island, and that this visit was taking
place in view of the fifth round of proximity talks on the Cyprus problem,
but was not part of them.

[03] President Clerides - Paphos airbase - Greek Defence Minister
Paphos, Oct 22 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today visited the Paphos
airbase, named after late Prime Minister of Greece Andreas Papandreou,
accompanied by the Defence Ministers of Greece and Cyprus, Akis
Tsohatzopoulos and Socratis Hasikos.
The President, who toured the premises of the base and spoke with pilots of
Greek F16 warplanes, said that the airbase was planned according to NATO
specifications and was a necessity, pointed out also by Andreas Papandreou.
