    [03] Cyprus - US military exercise

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) - The US has informed the Cyprus authorities that they will hold military exercises west of the island with warplanes that will be using its aircraft carrier "George Washington" which is already on its way here, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    The Spokesman also said the American exercise has no relation to the annual National Guard exercise code-named "Nikiforos", beginning tomorrow.

    [04] Foreign Minister - Mexican Under-Secretary - Agreement

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) - Mexico's Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs for North America and Europe, Juan Rebolledo Gout, has said there are some very encouraging signs regarding efforts to solve the Cyprus question.

    Gout, who arrived yesterday on the island for a three-day official visit, also said his country has always been very clear in supporting UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus. CNA/GG/RG/2000

    [05] Cyprus - New Israeli Ambassador

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) - The new Israeli Ambassador in Nicosia Michael Eligal has expressed appreciation for the Cyprus government's stance in the Middle East crisis, describing the position taken by the Republic as very balanced.

    He also thanked the Republic of Cyprus for offering to host a meeting between Israelis and Palestinians on its territory in a bid to defuse tensions. CNA/CC/MA/RG/2000

    [06] Nicosia - Moscow - Cooperation Agreement

    Moscow, Oct 16 (CNA) - Nicosia and Moscow Mayors, Lellos Demetriades and Yuri Luskov, will sign here tomorrow a Programme of Cooperation between the two cities covering the years 2001-2002.

    Demetriades, heading a delegation, arrived in Moscow today.

    [07] EU enlargement official - Visit

    Larnaca, Oct 16 (CNA) - The European Union (EU) Commission's Director General for Enlargement, Eneko Landaburu, arrived here late today for a 24- hour visit during which he will discuss the state of play in Cyprus' course for accession and the UN-led effort for a settlement on the island.

    Tomorrow, the EU chief negotiator with all the candidate countries will be received by President Glafcos Clerides and will meet Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.
