    [01] Britain - Cyprus

London, Oct 15 (CNA) - Britain continues to support a bizonal, bicommunal federation for Cyprus, the Head of the Southern European Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Jeremy Hill.

Hill has also welcomed the fact that the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides continue to participate in talks and said a settlement is not a prerequisite for Cyprus' accession to the European Union.

At a meeting between Barnet Conservative Councilors in London, Hill reiterated his government's position for a solution of the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

He pointed out that the political solution of the problem is not a precondition for the Republic's EU membership, adding that the continuing peace talks are an encouraging sign.

[02] UN day – Chief of Mission - Cypriots

Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) – As the UN greeted Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the buffer zone today, to mark 55 years since its establishment, people from both sides of the divide have welcomed such events which give them the chance to see each other and talk about the good old days before the country was divided as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Many, especially the young, sometimes admit that they meet their compatriots from the other side of the dividing wall of barbed wire and military observation posts for the first time and are pleased to see they do have things in common to talk about.
