    Party leaders - Proximity talks

    by Maria Myles

New York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- Leaders of Greek Cypriot political parties have expressed disappointment with developments in the UN-led peace talks, with the two coalition partners advocating consistency and seriousness in future negotiations to achieve the set objectives and the three opposition parties talking about digression from the agreed framework solution and suggesting this could lead to the dissolution of the Republic of Cyprus.

However, all five party leaders stressed that the Greek Cypriot side should pull itself together and argue its case at the negotiating table with consistency, making sure all interested sides know the limits of a compromise solution the Greek Cypriot side can accept, which is a bizonal, bicommunal federation with human rights and fundamental freedoms respected.

Greek Cypriot - Turkish Cypriot sides - Talks

    by Maria Myles

New, York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- As the UN-led peace talks are drawing to a close, with substantive discussions on the four core issues identified by the UN, the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides will have given the UN by Monday a clear picture of where they stand and the framework in which they are prepared to negotiate in future talks.

According to diplomatic sources close to the talks, the positions of the two sides on the key issues (constitution, security, territory, refugees- property) continue to differ a great deal, but one could claim that on the issue of security some of the floating ideas find the two sides approaching each other.

    Leopold Maurer - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles

New York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- European Union chief negotiator for Cyprus Leopold Maurer has said a Cyprus settlement should ensure that it causes no problems to the country's accession.

He also gave a friendly advice to the UN and everybody else involved in the Cyprus peace effort that they should be careful on the final outcome of the negotiations, implying that the EU factor should be taken seriously into account.
