    [01] Israeli Ambassador - Interview

    By Maria Myles Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) - Israel's Ambassador to Cyprus Shemi Tzur believes efforts to solve the the Cyprus problem is "a one way process" in which the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides know they have to take hard decisions.

    In an interview with CNA after a seven-year term in office here, Tzur, reiterating his country's adherence to a Cyprus settlement on the basis of UN resolutions and recognition of the legitimate government of the Republic, said he considers that thorny issues in the Cyprus question, such as the Turkish settlers and the withdrawal of Turkish troops, should be part and parcel of the final agreed package for a settlement.

    [03] Britain - Loizidou case

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- Britain will continue to remind Turkey of the need to respect the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in the Loizidou case, British Minister for Europe Keith Vaz said in a reply letter to British Member of the European Parliament Theresa Villiers.

    He noted that the British government shares Villiers' concern over Turkey's non- compliane with the judgement and "fully supports the judgement and attaches great importance to it being upheld." CNA/MK/GP/2000

    [04] Turkish army - Greek Cypriots - Abduction

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- The Turkish occupation troops have abducted two young Greek Cypriot men while traveling in their car at a disputed checkpoint, near the eastern British base of Dhekelia, in southeast Cyprus.

    Cyprus police identified them as Stelios Taki Papadopoulos and Neofytos Michali Kadi, both aged 24, from Limassol.

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- Cyprus' national soccer team left today for Andorra to play against this country's national team on Saturday, September 2.

    [06] Defence minister - European army - Denktash

    Larnaca, Aug 31 (CNA) - Cyprus has both the right and the obligation to participate in the European Union Common and Foreign Security Policy, Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos has said, dismissing loud criticism by the Turkish Cypriot side about the government's attempts to join the European army.

    "Our accession course is a one way street and a strategic policy choice. Our effort to be part of the European army must be seen within this context, " Hasikos said, on his way to Athens for a private visit.

    [07] Greenpeace - Protest

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) - Protesters, members of the global environmentalist group "Greenpeace" and local activists, chained themselves to the rails at the Presidential Palace as the cabinet was due to meet to press on with their demand to save the Akamas peninsula, on the far northwestern coast.

    Police intervened to cut the chains and removed the protesters from the rails at the entrance and the exit to the Presidential Palace, where ministers were arriving for a cabinet meeting.

    Parliamentary Presidents – Summit

    New York, Aug 31 (CNA) – Cyprus House President Spyros Kyprianou, in New York attending the summit of Parliamentary Presidents, has had a series of meetings with many of his counterparts and is set to see many others on the sidelines of the summit.

    On Friday, he is scheduled to address some 150 parliamentary speakers participating in the summit. He is expected to talk about the inability of the UN to implement its own Charter.
