[01] Peace and Environmentalist activists - Workshop
by Maria Chrysanthou Iicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The obstacles young pacifists
and environmentalists in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean face
in their attempts to cooperate were the main focus of a workshop organised
by the International Eco- Peace Village (IEV).
Both the organisers of the workshop and the participants have described
their experience as excellent and said they were determined to achieve
their objectives even though, as they admitted, there is a lot of work
ahead.

[02] RAND Corporation - Cyprus
Washington, Aug 26 (CNA) -- A US think-tank, RAND Corporation, believes a
major breakthrough on the Cyprus issue is unlikely to happen in the near
future but considers that there is a chance for Turkey to make some
concessions to facilitate a settlement in Cyprus in order to avoid a
possible Cyprus veto on its application for accession to the European
Union.
A report, on "The Future of Turkish - Western Relations: towards a
strategic plan", notes that Turkey now has "a greater incentive for trying
to achieve a settlement on Cyprus" which would give new impetus to the
recent thaw in Greco-Turkish relations but would also remove an important
obstacle to Turkey's eventual membership of the EU.
