[01] Greek Ambassador - Turkish occupied areas

Nicosia, Aug 25 (CNA) - Greece's Ambassador to Cyprus, Kyriacos Rodousakis, has stated that the economic crisis facing the Turkish- occupied areas is a result of the insistence of Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, on a so- called "state" which cannot survive.

He also described as "unfortunate" the fact that Turkish Cypriots did not wish to take advantage of Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides' invitation to participate in European Union accession negotiations, as the umbrella of the European Union provides political and economic protection to all member states, especially weak areas. Nicosia, Aug 25 (CNA) - Morphou Mayor, Antigoni Papadopoulou, has said that the twinning of her native town, occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, with Kalkadelen in Skopje is "one more provocative act in the long chain of provocations, escalating at times of talks on the Cyprus problem", noting that "the twinning itself is an indirect recognition of the pseudostate".

According to a press release, the Morphou municipality will protest to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, and House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou. CNA/RG/GP/2000
