    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- The Council of Europe calls on all member states to respect and develop freedom of expression and information, the President of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly stresses in a reply letter to Cyprus House President Spyros Kyprianou on the issue of the illegal arrest of Turkish Cypriot journalists in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island.

    The President of CoE Parliamentary Assembly Lord Russell Johnston recalls that the Council of Europe "defends free, independent and pluralistic media as essential elements to the functioning of democratic societies" and expresses the hope "that the procedural guarantees as contained in the European Convention on Human Rights will be respected" in the affair of Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa".

    [02] SOCCER: Cyprus - Albania - Friendly match

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- The national football teams of Cyprus and Albania will clash on August 15 in Tirana in a friendly game, as part of the two teams' preparation for the preliminary phase of the World Cup 2002.

    The Cypriot team leave for Albania on August 13. The match will played at "Qemal Stafa" national stadium at 1900 local time, according to the Albanian news agency ATA.

    [03] UN peace talks - Denktash - Alvaro de Soto

    Geneva, Aug 3 (CNA) -- All is going fine at the UN-led peace talks, according to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denkash, who was speaking after today's meeting with the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.

    "Everything is going on fine. We will meet again tomorrow," Denktash said after the meeting.
