    [03] Cyprus government - G8 statement

by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 24 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has expressed satisfaction with a Group of Eight (G8 - seven most industrialised countries and Russia) reference to the Cyprus problem, as it believes it shows that the international community and the world's most powerful countries consider it as one of the major issues that have to be tackled.

In a written statement issued in Geneva, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou describes the reference as positive and notes the G8 references on the need for a progress to be made in the current round of talks and the months ahead for a settlement giving full consideration to the UN Security Council resolutions and an undivided Cyprus. [04] Cyprus - Turkish occupied areas - Art smugglers

London, Jul 24 (CNA) - A report in today's "Times" notes that the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus have "long been regarded as a favourite route for art smugglers" and points out that a stolen handwritten 11th century Koran was to be smuggled into Britain through those areas.

The report says that the gold-embroidered manuscript was stolen last year from the Topkapi Palace Museum in Constantinople, Turkey, and was taken to the areas in Cyprus under Turkish occupation, from where a contact was made with Christies of London to inquire whether they could buy the item.
