Britain - Cyprus problem - EU

London, Jul 19 (CNA) - Britain has assured it is doing everything possible in support of the proximity talks aimed at reaching a settlement in Cyprus and reaffirmed that a settlement is not a precondition for the Republic's accession to the European Union, noting Cyprus has made "excellent progress" in its negotiations with the Union.

Replying to questions in the House of Commons Tuesday, State Minister for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs responsible for Europe, Keith Vaz also said that Turkey's candidacy is a separate issue to that of Cyprus and will be judged on the Copenhagen criteria and the state of its negotiations.
