[01] Government - CoE Cyprus Rapporteur - Statements
Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) - The Cyprus Rapporteur at the Council of Europe
Parliamentary Assembly Political Committee Andras Barsony today underlined
that only the Republic of Cyprus is recognised and said his visit and
overnight stay in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island have been
"misinterpreted".
Barsony, who raised strong reaction from the government and political
parties after he stayed overnight in the areas of the island occupied by
Turkey since 1974 and addressed the Turkish Cypriot leader as "president",
was speaking after a meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, which
he described as "very successful and fruitful".
On his part, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said "the whole issue
is considered closed even though the situation will be closely monitored"
and said President Clerides conveyed his dissatisfaction with certain
particular actions of the Hungarian deputy.
