    [01] Fire - Police Spokesman

    Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- Fire-fighters battling blazes which raged throughout Larnaca district over the last three days were optimistic they would be able to put them out completely today after all night efforts.

    A Fire Brigade spokesman told CNA that special care will be taken today not to allow the strong winds to fan the blazes which destroyed vegetation, trees and pine forests and endangered residential areas.

    [02] President Clerides - Top UN envoy

    Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, began his contacts on the island this morning with a working breakfast with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    No statements were made after the two-hour meeting at the Presidential Palace, which was also attended by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Attorney-General Alecos Markides, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou and Presidential Under-Secretary Pantelis Kouros.

    [03] Man - Dog - Shot

    Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- A 50-year-old Cypriot man was found shot next to his dead dog yesterday.

    Polidoros Shizas, a shop owner from the Strovolos suburb of Nicosia, and father of three children, was found dead by his wife with his shotgun and his dog lying next to him. Police preliminary investigations believe he had shot his dog and then shot himself in the head.

    [04] Cyprus - Georgia - New ambassador

    Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- Georgia's President, Eduard Shevardnadze, has expressed the hope that there will be soon a just solution to the Cyprus problem, based on international law.

    Shevardnadze made this statement while receiving the credentials of Cyprus' new ambassador in Tbilisi, Charalambos Ioannides, who expressed President Glafcos Clerides' appreciation over Georgia's support for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    [05] Government Spokesman - Alvaro de Soto

    Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides was asked by UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, to abide by an embargo on statements about the contents of their meeting this morning.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that the President pledged to respect the request therefore no statements will be made about de Soto's meetings.
