    [01] Cyprus - Israel - Flights

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - Cyprus and Israel have agreed on technical matters, relating flights by Israeli war planes in the Nicosia FIR (Flight Information Region), Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced here today.

    He also said Israel has assured it would meet its obligations and both sides have committed themselves to improving existing cooperation between the authorities dealing with such matters.

    [04] Cyprus - UN - Turkey - Violations

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus has strongly protested new violations of its national airspace and the Nicosia flight information region (FIR) by Turkish military aircraft.

    The protest took the form of a letter dated June 5 to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan by Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Organisation Sotos Zackheos, an official statement says.

    [05] Cyprus - UN - Report

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - The UN Secretary General has issued a corrigendum on two paragraphs of his report on the UN operation in Cyprus, which he submitted to the Security Council in late May.

    One correction notes that air violations of the UN buffer zone by the Turkish military increased and the second rectifies an error, which originally referred to Greek troops, replacing the phrase with National Guard (the Republic's armed forces).

    [06] UN envoy - Visit

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General Alvaro de Soto arrives here Thursday evening for meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in view of the third round of proximity talks, scheduled to begin in Geneva on July 5.

    On Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17 de Soto will have a working breakfast with President Clerides. On both these days, he is to see Denktash in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus.

    [07] President Clerides - Russian Special Envoy

    Ķicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Russian Special Representative for Cyprus Vladimir Prygin, on his first visit to the island since his appointment last month, expressed today the hope for progress during the third round of proximity talks, pointing out that negotiations could not go on for ever, but should aim at producing results.

    Prygin had today separate meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou and tomorrow he is expected to meet in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    [08] EU-Cyprus Intergovernmental Conference

    Brussels, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus is in the lead among all candidate countries in talks for accession to the European Union, as reaffirmed today at the fifth EU-Cyprus Intergovernmental Conference at Foreign Ministers' level.

    The chapter on fiscal control closed today, placing Cyprus top of the list with 16 out of 29 chapters provisionally closed, followed by Estonia, which has closed 13 chapters.
