    [03] Commerce Minister - Ministerial Conference - Athens

    Nicosia, June 1 (CNA) -- Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis stressed Cyprus' eagerness to contribute to efforts for the protection of maritime environment in the Mediterranean, noting that the existing legislative regime sets out stringent standards for seawater quality and for activities undertaken in the coastal region, including energy imports and transformation of energy.

    In his intervention at a Ministerial Conference in Athens on "The impact of Energy projects on the Mediterranean and Black Sea", Rolandis noted that for "the Mediterranean people the Sea constitutes an important factor in our prosperity" and that the government "formulates and implements policies in order to ensure that the environment of Cyprus will be an inexhaustible source of wealth for the future generations".

    [04] House of Representatives - Oil - Prices

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) - The plenary session of the House of Representatives today rejected a government proposal for an increase in oil prices and passed amended regulations, after suggestions put forward by the House Economic Committee. The House decision reverts prices back to the level they were prior to yesterday's increase of 4 cents per litre of super petrol and 2 cents per litre of diesel.

    There were 24 votes for the amended regulations, from left-wing AKEL and centre DIKO, 18 against from right-wing DISI and the United Democrats, as well as two abstentions from the Movement of Socialdemocrats. CNA/RG/EC/2000
