    [01] EU Employers' Federations - Round Table - EU Commissioner

    Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) -- Greek European Union Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs Anna Diamantopolulou today presented the Commission's priorities regarding the social dialogue, at the two-day 4th Round Table of the Industrial and Employers' Federations of the 15 member-states and candidate countries, taking place in Nicosia.

    On his part Chairman of the Cyprus Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEV) Michael Zivanaris praised cooperation between the social partners until today and said they now have a new role to play in view of the Republic's bid to join the European Union.

    [03] CoE - Legal Affairs Committee meeting - Opening

    Limassol, May 22( CNA) -- The Cyprus Republic's Attorney- General Alecos Markides today called on the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE), meeting in Cyprus, to implement the decisions of its court and affirm its credibility.

    He further stressed that in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus the European Convention on Human Rights "is a matter of law applicable, yet it does not in practice enjoy the effective protection of the Convention" .

    [04] Cyprus - EU - Negotiations

    Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) - Three new chapters of the acquis communautaire open on Friday in Brussels, at the 8th Session of the Inter-Governmental Conference at the level of negotiators and permanent representatives of the European Union (EU) member states. The Republic of Cyprus will have to reply in writing to the EU positions at a later date.

    Planning Bureau General Director, Panicos Pouros, told CNA that he would be standing in for Cyprus' Chief Negotiator for EU accession, George Vassiliou, who is recovering from an operation.

    [05] Spokesman - British Bases - Attorney-General - Deputy

    Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) -- The British Bases in Cyprus categorically denied today allegations by a local deputy who said that a Red Arrows aircraft encountered mechanical problems during its two month practice camp on the island.

    At the same time, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou criticised the deputy for undertaking initiatives which may possibly have consequences on the Republic's foreign policy and the Cyprus problem while Attorney-General Alecos Markides said a deputy's immunity does not extend in the British Bases.

    [06] Cyprus - Czech Republic - Air transport agreement

    Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) - Cyprus and the Czech Republic have initialed an air transport agreement, to replace a similar agreement reached in 1967 between Cyprus and the former Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia.

    An official statement issued today says the new text was initialed after negotiations between the two countries, which took place in Prague earlier this month.

    British Bases - Illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) -- The British Bases in Cyprus today released 33 illegal immigrants, all from Iraq, who arrived at their base in Episkopi, on Cyprus' southern coast, in October 1998 to refugee accommodation centres in Dhekelia, the second base Britain retains in Cyprus since granting the island independence from colonial rule in 1960.

    "They have been released to accommodation in Dhekelia where they are free to come and go within the eastern sovereign base area but they are not free to come into the Republic," Bases Spokesman Rob Need told CNA.

    Papadopoulos - DIKO - Presidency Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) - Centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) Parliamentary Spokesman Tasos Papadopoulos today announced he will contest the party presidency in its congress to be held in September, after a decision by its founder and president Spyros Kyprianou not to run for the post.

    Announcing his decision at a press conference, Papadopoulos said he challenges the position "without any bargaining or commitment, with an aim my candidacy will form a pivot of union and assent".
