    [01] Greek Foreign Minister - US official - Cyprus peace talks

    Washington, May 4 (CNA) - US presidential emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses believes the present process aimed at reaching a settlement in Cyprus offers hopes for success and said the two sides on the island, Greece and Turkey are engaged in this effort.

    Speaking to reporters after a meeting here yesterday with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou with whom he discussed the Cyprus question, Moses reiterated President Bill Clinton's backing to the Cyprus peace process and said a comprehensive settlement remains a priority for the US government.

    [02] President Clerides - Cabinet meeting

    Nicosia, May 4 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides left this morning the private clinic in which he will undergo surgery Friday to remove a benign polyp that was found on his large intestine, to chair a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

    President Clerides arrived at the Presidential Palace for the meeting accompanied by the Undersecretary to the President and his closest aide Pantelis Kouros, while later this afternoon he will undergo an MRI test.

    [03] Foreign envoys - Postponement of visits

    Nicosia, May 4 (CNA) -- Visits to Cyprus by foreign envoys involved in efforts to reach a settlement on the island have been postponed due to the operation President Glafcos Clerides will undergo on Friday to remove a polyp from his large intestine.

    UN Secretary-General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, US presidential emissary Alfred Moses and State Department special coordinator for Cyprus Tomas Weston will visit the island at a later date, depending on the outcome of the President's health, UNFICYP and US embassy officials told CNA today.

    Wind: Southewesterly moderate to fresh in the afternoon, light to moderate during the night.

    Temperature: Maximum Inland 26 On Coasts 23 C.

    Minimum Inland 12 On Coasts 14 C. Outlook for Sunday and Monday 07/05/2000 to 08/05/2000

    Weather: Mainly fine with probability of isolated of showers over the mountains in the afternoon. No significant change in temperature.

    [05] President Clerides - Clinic - Staff

    Nicosia, May 4 (CNA) -- The staff at the Presidential Palace today held a brief ceremony to wish President Glafcos Clerides a speedy recovery and to return to his duties the soonest, after a meeting of the Council of Ministers which the President chaired on his doctors' permission.

    Before leaving his office to return to the clinic where he will undergo an operation to remove a polyp found on his large intestine tomorrow, President Clerides had a telephone conversation with Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos and US ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler.
