    New York, May 3 (CNA) -- The absence of any progress in the Cyprus peace process is bound to affect in an adverse manner improved Greco-Turkish relations, Greek and US diplomats believe, who also stress that the UN-led sponsored peace talks should now tackle the substance of the Cyprus question.

    The foreign ministers of Greece, Turkey and the US met here Tuesday for thirty minutes to discuss Cyprus and Greco-Turkish relations. The two visiting ministers discussed Cyprus with US Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke, who underscored the need for a Cyprus solution.

    [02] National Guard Commander - Appointment

    Nicosia, May 3 (CNA) -- Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis, from Greece, is the new Commander of the National Guard, the Cyprus Republic's armed forces, it was officially announced here Tuesday.

    The appointment is subject to approval by Cyprus' Council of Ministers. Florakis, a retired military man, replaces Lieutenant General Demetrios Demou, also from Greece, whose term of office ended last week.

    [03] President - Routine medical examination

    Nicosia, May 3 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides, in a private clinic for a routine medical check-up, is epxected to leave the climic later today, according to his doctors, who described the President as "an excellent patient, one of the best, who listens to his doctors."

    The President was admitted to "Evangelistria" clinic Monday in Nicosia, and already the cardiology tests have shown nothing upnormal. Doctors carry out more tests.

    [04] Cyprus Shipping Coucil - ICS- Elections

    Nicosia, May 3 (CNA) -- Ohe Cyprus Shipping Council representative Klaus E. Oldendorff has been re-elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Chamber of Shipping and has been appointed Vice-President of the ICS for a two-year term.

    According to a press release issued here by the Cyprus Shipping Council this is the first time a representative of the Cyprus Shipping Council is elected ICS Vice-President.

    [05] President Clerides - Operation

    Nicosia, May 3 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides will undergo a surgery for polyps in the large intestine, according to an official announcement, which says the President will be able to return to his duties in the next fortnight.

    "On Friday, May 5, the President of the Republic will undergo surgery to remove polyps in the large intestine," the announcement reads, adding that "he will be in a position to undertake his duties fully in the next fifteen days".

    The President was admitted to a private clinic in the capital Nicosia on Monday for medical check-ups.

    According to the announcement, his meetings with foreign officials expected to visit the island within the framework of efforts to settle the Cyprus problem have been postponed.

    The press release refers to his scheduled meetings with UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses and Britain's special envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay.

    [06] House President - Portuguese FM

    Nicosia, May 3 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister of Portugal Jaime Gama has pledged the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union (EU) will do its best to support Cyprus' accession negotiations with the Union.

    Gama, who arrived yesterday in Cyprus for a two-day visit, today met with President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou.

    [07] President Clerides - Doctor - Statements

    Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) -- The polyps in President Clerides' large intestine appears to be non-malignant, according to doctor Andreas Constantinides of the private clinic in which the President is being treated.

    Speaking to CNA Constantinides said the polyps must be removed through surgery, noting however that it is a simple operation and his doctors are very optimistic.

    "The polyps appears to be non-malignant," he added.

    Replying to questions, Constantinides said he will carry out the operation along with his colleague George Kyriakides.

    "In such cases we always want two surgeons to be present," he added.

    Doctor Constantindes said "we are very optimistic", describing the operation as "simple".

    According to an official announcement issued earlier, the President will undergo surgery on Friday, May 5, and is expected to return to his duties in the next fortnight.

    The President was admitted to a private clinic in the capital Nicosia on Monday for medical check-ups.
