[04] British High Commissioner - Cyprus problem - Interview

by Maria Myles Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) -- Britain believes that the UN-led talks are "one long conversation with intermissions" which should now address the substance of the Cyprus question and should lead to a comprehensive settlement, and not some kind of an intermim agreement, bound to involve trade offs if it is to be viable.

In an interview with CNA a year after he came to Cyprus as the UK's High Commissioner and in view of the resumption of peace talks on May 23, Edward Clay said London considers the issues of security and territory and compensation very complex matters, adding the UN is the best qualified forum to carry through the peace talks to put an end to the "present insupportable situation" on the island.
