    Nicosia, Apr, 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides received here today Israel's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Communications Benjamin Men - Eliezer, who arrived in Cyprus on Sunday for a two-day visit.

    Eliezer was also received today by House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou.

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Cuba have signed a protocol for cooperation between the two countries' Foreign Ministries.

    The protocol was signed in Havana by Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and his Cuban counterpart Felipe Perez Roque.

    [04] Deputy House President - Ljubliana - Meeting

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) -- Deputy President of the House of Representatives Nicos Anastassiades today left for Ljubliana, Slovenia, to represent Cyprus' Parliament in the 9th Meeting of the President of the European Parliament with parliamentary speakers of the countries participating in the European Union (EU) enlargement process.

    The issues to be discussed during the Meeting include the EU enlargement, the national identity within the EU, and the effort to simplify legislation in order to make it more comprehensible to citizens.

    [05] President Clerides - Dukakis

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides today received former Governor of Massachusetts Michael Dukakis, who said that the United States have a very important role in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, and that Europe will also be a key-player in view of the accession to the European Union of Cyprus and Turkey.

    Speaking after the meeting, Dukakis promised "we are going to work as hard as we can" on the Cyprus problem and that US President Bill Clinton "feels very strongly about these issues".

    [06] EU - Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee

    Ķicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) -- Members of the European Parliament and European Union officials reaffirmed here today that a Cyprus settlement is not a precondition for the island's accession to the EU, while they welcomed improved Greco-Turkish relations and pointed to increased obligations on the part of Ankara to carry out political and economic reforms as a result of the EU Helsinki Summit conclusions last December.

    The European officials were speaking at the 17th meeting of the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee, which opened today and ends tomorrow in Nicosia. They will address issues such as the political situation in Cyprus, current EU-Cyprus relations and accession negotiations, the EU Intergovernmental Conference, protection of the environment and preservation of Cyprus' cultural heritage, safety in the shipping sector, taxation of the off-shore sector.
