    [01] ICFTU - Resolution - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 12 (CNA) - The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) has welcomed and expressed support for "the renewed effort to reach a long overdue settlement of the problems of Cyprus", divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island's northern third.

    In a resolution adopted during its 17th Congress, which took place in South Africa last week, the ICFTU "reiterates its call on all parties to show a spirit of conciliation and cooperate fully with the United Nations to achieve a just, peaceful and durable solution, which safeguards the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and guarantees to both, the Greek and Turkish communities, their human and democratic rights".

    [02] Cyprus University - Polytechnic

    Nicosia, Apr 12 (CNA) - The Polytechnic School of the University of Cyprus is expected to open in 2001-2002 with four departments and 105 students.

    Director of Higher Education, Constantinos Yialloukas, told the House of Representatives Education Committee that the University has already announced four positions for professors and will soon announce another seven, with the goal of filling a total of 28 positions, so that the four departments of the School will be able to operate satisfactorily.

    [03] House delegation - Turkey - OSCE Seminar

    Nicosia, Apr 12 (CNA) - A four-member delegation from the Cyprus House of Representatives is in Turkey participating in a two-day seminar, organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

    The seminar on "Minorities in the 21st Century" is taking place today and tomorrow in Antalya.
