    [02] Government Spokesman - Cyprus - EU institutions

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has communicated to the European Union, both verbally and in writing, its willingness to participate in all the bloc's institutions, including those of security, without abandoning its position for the demilitarisation of the island.

    The government's positions were announced today by its spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, who told the media that he would be able to give more information tomorrow on the chapter concerning the Common Foreign and Security Policy. CNA/MA/RG/ĚCH/2000

    [04] Robin Cook – British MP - Cyprus

    Nicosia, April 4 (CNA) -- British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has reaffirmed his country's support to the UN Secretary – General's efforts towards a settlement in the Cyprus problem, pointing out a solution needs to address current restrictions on freedom of movement on the island.

    Replying to a letter by Labour MP Andrew Dismore, Cook underlined Britain's policy on Cyprus "is clear and unchanged" noting that a settlement in the Cyprus problem "is not a precondition of accession," to the European Union and that "Cyprus's accession is not linked to that of Turkey."

    President Clerides - Metropolitan Museum - Cyprus Halls Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today inaugurated the four new galleries of Cypriot art in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. In his speech, he said "it is imperative that the antagonisms of the past be replace by a new spirit of conciliation and mutual respect of different cultures and civilisations".

    He also reiterated the government's determination "to investigate the fate and pursue the return of every object of our heritage removed illegally" from the northern third of the Republic under Turkish occupation since 1974, when Turkey invaded the island, "to their legal owners".

    [06] CoE - Parliamentary Assembly - Turkey - Loizidou case

    by Riana Magidou Strasbourg, Apr 4 (CNA) - A letter calling on Turkey to meet its obligations deriving from the European Court of Human Rights ruling on the Titina Loizidou case was sent today to Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem by Chairman-in-office of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE), Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen.

    In his communication to the Parliamentary Assembly of the CoE in Strasbourg, Cowen said today that the letter emphasises the CoE concern "at the continuing failure by Turkey to meet its obligations".
