    [01] Charalambides - Death

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Former Cypriot Defence Minister and Nicosia District Officer, George Charalambides, 64, passed away last night at a London hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

    Charalambides had served at the District Offices of Paphos and Limassol as well as the Ministries of Labour, Education and Interior and the Planning Bureau.

    [02] President - Cyprus question

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has warned against relinquishing a federal solution in Cyprus, saying this would bring the Greek Cypriot side before charges which the Turkish Cypriot side now has to face.

    The President also said it was necessary for Europe to clearly define its policy on the solution of the problem, adding that the Turkish Cypriot leader is now putting forward demands for substantive negotiatons.

    He warned that such a development would put the Greek Cypriot side under fire, like the Turkish Cypriot side which is seeking confederation instead of federation, as provided by the UN resolutions.

    [03] Blomberg - Vassiliou

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) - Finnish Special Representative for Cyprus, Jaakko Blomberg, said here today that there is a new dynamic in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after a meeting with Cyprus' Chief Negotiator for European Union Accession George Vassiliou, Blomberg noted however that he did not expect any progress on the Cyprus problem in the near future. CNA/RG/GP/2000
