[01] Cyprus Government - Economy in occupied areas

Nicosia, Mar 23 (CNA) - Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou today called on the Turkish Cypriots to tackle the root of the problem that has led to a bad economy in the Turkish-Occupied areas, which is none other than the continuing Turkish occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory since 1974.

Invited to comment on press reports that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel will write to foreign government officials asking them to help lift what the Turkish side describes as an "embargo" against the export of produce from the occupied areas, Papapetrou said the Cyprus government does not impose an embargo but adheres to decisions by European courts.
