    [03] AKEL General Secretary - British - US - Ambassadors

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- The Cyprus problem should be solved on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation, General Secretary of leading opposition left-wing party AKEL Dimitris Christofias and Britain's High Commissioner in Cyprus Edward Clay reiterated today.

    Christofias had separate meetings today with the British High Commissioner and US Ambassador to the island Donald Bandler during which they discussed developments in the Cyprus problem in view of the third round of UN-led proximity talks to take place in New York on May 23.

    [04] Government Spokesman - EU Commissioner's visit

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- The visit of European Union Commissioner for enlargement Gunter Verheugen to Cyprus next week will give the chance to reaffirm President Glafcos Clerides' invitation for Turkish Cypriot participation in the Cyprus team negotiating the island's accession to the EU, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Replying to questions during his daily press briefing, Papapetrou said "there is no information that the European Commissioner is bringing anything concrete" and added that "the government expects this visit will boost EU-Cyprus coordination in regards to the island's European course".

    [05] Government Spokesman - Proximity talks

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today the third round of UN- led proximity talks scheduled to begin in New York on May 23 will be "particularly significant" because it will reveal what the future of the new process aiming at a Cyprus settlement will be.

    Papapetrou called upon all those who wish for a successful outcome of the current process to "take the necessary action" between now and May 23 in order to avoid a deadlock and pointed out that the government is not prepared to take part in a process which would be of no purpose.
