    [01] Foreign Minister - House - British Bases - Echelon

    Nicosia, Mar 3(CNA) - The Cyprus government does not wish to raise an issue for the withdrawal of the British Bases on the island, stressed here Friday Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, therefore it will not ask the British to stop operating their surveillance equipment which are installed at their two Bases in Cyprus.

    Meanwhile, left-wing AKEL party called on British Prime Minister Tony Blair to intervene for the immediate shutting down of the two Echelon spying systems which are operating on the territory of the British Bases.

    [02] UN - Cyprus - Payment

    Nicosia, Mar 3(CNA) - UN Secretary-General's Spokesman, Fred Eckhard, announced, "Cyprus has become the 61st member state to be paid in full for this year's regular budget".

    In his press briefing yesterday, Eckhard said that Cyprus on Wednesday made a payment of "just over 350.000 dollars".

    [03] Albright - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 3 (CNA) - US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright expressed the wish for a Cyprus settlement pointing out that it "has been with us for a long time", adding, however, that when a solution will be reached depends on how current UN-led talks go.

    Responding to a question by Senator Barbara Mikulski, during a sub-committee discussion, Albright said the US "continue to be facilitators in trying to get a comprehensive settlement".

    [04] De Soto - Pyla - Visit

    Pyla, Mar 3 (CNA) - Alvaro de Soto, the UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, conveyed a message of support to the residents of the mixed Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot village of Pyla during a visit here Friday.

    In a short statement, de Soto said the purpose of his visit was to see "on the spot with my own eyes and to talk with the muktars (village community leaders) how life goes on in Pyla".

    [06] DISY - Discussion - G/C & T/C

    Nicosia, Mar 3 (CNA) - A round-table discussion on the role of the Press in Greco-Turkish relations" will be held on March 15 by the Democratic Rally Group on Rapprochement and Civil Society at the Ledra Palace hotel in the buffer zone. Kate Clerides, member of the Political Bureau and DISY deputy, told a press conference today that during the discussion the Greek and Turkish languages will be used and there will be a translation in English for diplomats and UN officials attending.
