[01] Cyprus - US State Department reports
Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - The government believes the US State Department
references to Cyprus in its report on narcotics and a second one on money
laundering and financial crimes reflect the progress and serious
improvement the Republic has achieved in these fields, its spokesman
Michalis Papapetrou told his daily briefing today.
The reports for 1999, released yesterday, say Cyprus has made "further
progress in 1999 in the fight against money laundering" while its
authorities aggressively pursue the "distribution of drugs use, as they do
illegal cultivation, sale, transport and financing".

[04] Cyprus government - Peace process
Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has called for direct
negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish sides to reach a
settlement on the island as it believes that if the sides "talk just for
the sake of talking" the process will lose its credibility.
Speaking on the Cyprus problem during a lunch organised today by the Cyprus
Rotaries in Nicosia, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said the time has
come for one side to know the positions the other is putting forward during
their separate meetings with UN officials within the framework of the
proximity talks.
