[01] UN top envoy - Arrival
Larnaca, Mar 01 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on
CyprusAlvaro de Soto arrived here today to primarily and essentially get a
"generaloverview" of the situation on the ground and not to continue in any
way the UN-led proximity talks, due to resume in New York in May. Speaking
on arrival at Larnaca airport, the Peruvian diplomat said he would however
touch upon some of the substance of the talks and noted that at present the
UN does not intend to change the current format of the talks. De Soto said
Cyprus' accession course towards the European Union has a bearing on the UN
effort to reach a comprehensive settlement, adding that his contacts in
Brussels in the past couple of days were "no accident."
