    [01] Cyprus - Peace talks

    Geneva, Feb 7 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who is leading the peace talks in Geneva, is scheduled to have separate meetings here today and tomorrow with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides to round up the positions they have expressed during the peace talks, before they come to a close on Tuesday.

    On his part Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides was scheduled to have a working breakfast Monday with Britain's envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay and a dinner with the US officials in Geneva, on the wings of the proximity talks that opened here January 31.

    [02] De Klerk - Visit to Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Frederik de Klerk arrives here tomorrow at the invitation of the Popular Bank to speak on "Peace and Reconciliation in divided societies. The experience of South Africa".

    During his short stay, he will meet Acting President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and former President of the Republic George Vassiliou.

    [03] Cyprus - UK - Tourism

    London, Feb 7 (CNA) -- More than 1,3 million British tourists are expected to visit Cyprus this year, according to the Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO).

    CTO Manager in the UK Orestis Rossides told CNA that cumulative bookings for Cyprus for the year 2000 made by the end of December 1999 are 42 per cent up, compared to those of the same period in 1998.

    [04] Cyprus - Telephone communication

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) -- The automated telephone service facilitating communication between the government-controlled and the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus provided for nearly 1000 calls per day during 1999, according to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

    A tabulation of calls showed a total of 354,647 completed calls during the year. There were 228,663 calls from the free areas to the occupied areas and 125,984 from the occupied to the free areas.

    [05] UNCTAD - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Responses to the perils as well as the potential of globalisation will be assessed by ministers of trade, development and finance at the tenth meeting of the UN Conference of Trade and Development (UNCTAD X), from 12 to 19 February in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Cyprus will be represented at the meeting by Pambos Orphanides, Commercial Officer at the Department of Trade of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade.

    [06] President Clerides - UN envoy

    Geneva, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said the UN appear satisfied that they have made progress in the Geneva proximity talks between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, in the sense that they have both put forward their views.

    Replying to questions after a 90-minute meeting here today with the UN Secretary-General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, the Cypriot President said he cannot say whether any progress has been achieved as one side does not know the other side's positions.

    [07] Greek Cypriots - Turkish Cypriots - London Centre

    London, Feb 7 (CNA) - Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots representing organisations from both communities in London called on Haringey Council not to cut a core grant to a centre used for bicommunal gatherings and events.

    Its chairman, Turkish Cypriot Hasan Raif, speaking during the annual general meeting of the Cypriot Community Centre, which voted for a campaign against a decision by Haringey Council to cut by 54,000 pounds during the next three years the core grant to the centre, said the Cypriot community will do whatever possible for help in the reunification of the island, divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded Cyprus.
