    Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) - The UN-led proximity talks scheduled to resume on Monday in Geneva, will start with separate meetings of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his Special Adviser, Alvaro de Soto.

    Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced today the talks, which will take place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, are not expected to last more than ten days.

    [03] Maurer - Vasiliou - Press conference

    Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) - European Union (EU) top negotiator for Cyprus Leopold Maurer said that the content of UN-led peace talks should be in conformity with the EU rules and regulations, noting also increased EU interest in Cyprus.

    Maurer stressed that Brussels is negotiating with the Republic of Cyprus and there cannot be two different voices dealing with the EU and said that by the end of the current Portuguese presidency in June all chapters will be under discussion.

    [04] UNFICYP new commander - President Clerides

    Nicosia, Jan 28(CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides received today United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP's) new commander, Major-General Victory Rana of Nepal. The new commander was presented to Clerides by Acting Special Representative and Chief of Mission of UNFICYP James Holger.

    No statements were made after the meeting. Rana succeeds Major-General Evergisto Arturo de Vergara of Argentina who relinquished his post last December. CNA FZ/EC/MM/2000 ENDS,

    [05] Sir David Hannay - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) -- British Special Representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, reiterated that Britain supports a bizonal, bicommunal federation as a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    In an interview today with CNA, Sir David described the climate of the proximity talks on the Cyprus problem as "encouraging", adding that the second round which will resume on Monday in Geneva under UN auspices, will have to go into greater depth. KT/RG/EC/2000

    [06] Tsohatzopoulos - Meetings - Departure

    Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) -- Greek Defence Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos, who concluded a two-day visit to Cyprus today, reiterated that the joint defence pact between Greece and Cyprus remains strong.

    Speaking after meetings with his Cypriot counterpart, Socrates Hasikos, and Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, Tsohatzopoulos said that the two countries have reached the height of their coordination regarding the effectiveness of "joint preparation and tackling of crises, whether they be theoretical or real".

    [07] House President - Discharged

    Nicosia, Jan 28(CNA) - House President Spyros Kyprianou who underwent major heart surgery in the US on January 20, was discharged from hospital today and is expected to return to Cyprus around the end of next week.

    A press release issued by his doctor Costas Zambartas described Kyprianou's recuperation as satisfactory adding that the House President will remain in Cleveland, Ohio, for a few more days where he will be monitored on an outpatient basis before ret urning to Cyprus.

    [08] Lord Owen - "Economist"

    Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) -- Former British Foreign Secretary and European Union Co-Chairman of the International Conference on former Yugoslavia, Lord David Owen, has said that the international community's commitment to settling the Cyprus question creates "a substantial hope for resolution in the relatively near future".

    Lord Owen was speaking today at the two-day "Economist" Conference "Heading Towards European Union (EU)" which ended this evening in Nicosia.

    [09] De Soto - Presser - Geneva - Second round of UN talks on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 28(CNA) - UN Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, has said the improved climate between Greece and Turkey will provide a fertile ground for reaching meaningful progress down the road during the second round of the UN-led proximit y talks on Cyprus.

    At a press conference in Geneva in view of Monday's resumption of the talks at the Palais de Congress, de Soto further expressed hope that at this session the parties will concentrate on a continued exploration of what began in New York last December on the four core issues that Secretary-General Kofi Annan has identified.
