  • [01] UN - Restoration of sites Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- The UN has announced plans to restore two significant cultural sites in Cyprus, the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Apostolos Andreas, in the Turkish-occupied areas, and the Moslem mosque of Hala Sultan in the free areas of the Republic.

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has described this development as "a very constructive step forward, one well-suited to the spirit of the new year."

  • [02] Cyprus - Mauritius - Agreement Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Mauritius will sign an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation.

    The agreement will be signed here on Friday (January 21) by the two countries' Ministers of Finance, Takis Klerides of Cyprus and Vasant Kumar Bunwaree of the Republic of Mauritius.

  • [03] Missing - Exhumation - Identification process Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- As forensic experts continue to exhume remains of missing persons and war dead of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus at two local cemeteries, relatives of some of them are expected to be notified in the second week of February about the fate of their loved ones.

    A forensic team of experts, working under Dr William Haglund of the international organisation "Physicians for Human Rights", is already on the island and started exhumations at one of the sites, Lakatamia Military cemetery, in the southern outskirts of Nicosia.

    Mathias was received by President Glafcos Clerides while yesterday he met Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

  • [06] Kasoulides - Letter - EU Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has sent letters to his European Union counterparts, pointing out that following the Helsinki summit the Turkish Cypriot side is trying to approach the EU, violating EU decisions and resolutions, including the Luxembourg European Council conclusions.

    Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here Tuesday the "Foreign Minister and his ministry are engaged in a continuous effort to promote" the Cyprus policy "and are taking measures to avoid the danger of recognition of the illegal regime".
